At John Mason, Social Science consists of:

Psychology (KS4-5)

The purpose of delivering psychology at JMS is to inspire students to find out more about human behaviour and understand why we do the things we do. We aim to convey passion and genuine interest in human behaviour from teacher to student. Students are guided to develop their skills when analysing the validity of research by encouraging them to consistently be critical of key studies or theories. They should also be able to see how these theories apply to real life examples in order to understand the relevance of the subject and the content covered. Students should also gain experience in conducting psychological research; understanding how to plan, conduct and analyse data from studies they have conducted themselves.

Business Studies (KS4-5)

Business helps students to gain knowledge and understanding of key business concepts and give the students the opportunity to explore real business issues and how businesses work. Students will consider the practical application of business concepts. The units provide opportunities to explore theories and concepts in the most relevant way, through the context of events in the business and economic world. Students apply their knowledge and understanding to different business contexts ranging from small enterprises to large multinationals and businesses operating in local, national and global contexts. Students develop an understanding of how these contexts impact on business behaviour.

Health and Social Care (KS4)

Health and Social Care equips our students to discover the impact of positive and negative human development and to critically analyse how these factors affect our day to day lives. Health and Social Care enables students to explore areas that influence how we develop throughout life stages and in turn raise expectations of how we can live successful and healthy lives now and in our future. Understanding of the different Care Values within Health and Social Care are developed to enable students to learn how to work within any health or social environment and why each one is important.  Students will also be encouraged to do further research into the different settings and roles within those settings relating them to health conditions.

Sociology (KS5)

Our vision for students studying sociology at JMS to leave with a better understanding and interest in key issues which face us as members of society. We want them to be able to engage with current affairs in a critical way and form their own opinions on how to deal with these issues. ‘Sociologists are typically motivated by their desire to better understand the fundamental principles of social life, believing that an understanding of these principles will help improve people’s lives through more enlightened and effective policies’ BSA. We aim to inspire our students to be able to see the importance of pursuing careers which can improve people’s lives in this way, as well as equip them with the skills to be able to do so.

Criminology (KS5)

The criminology course involves looking at our current understanding of what is 'criminal' and how this varies according to time and place, conflicting theories to explain criminal behaviour, a detailed look at the processes of criminal investigation as well as an assessment of the British criminal justice system. The course aims to provide an understanding of criminology, which is relevant to many job roles within the criminal justice sector, social and probation work and sociology and psychology. WJEC Level 3 Applied Diploma in Criminology is a qualification with elements of psychology, law and sociology that complements studies in humanities. Criminology provides our students with a more accessible course to study at 6th form, which will support learners progressing to university.

Social Influence

Although we think of ourselves as individuals, research shows that a huge amount of the time our behaviour, actions and even thoughts and feelings are shaped by others.  This can have huge implications: why do ‘good’ people do terrible things like abuse prisoners, participate in the Holocaust etc.

Psychological Research

Understanding how psychological research is carried out is essential to be able to critically analyse studies in psychology. Students should have practical experience of designing and carrying out their own research in order to be able to truly understand the decisions that need to made when trying to investigate the hardest subject of all; human beings.

Development

It may seem obvious to us that 5 counters spread out far apart is the same number as 5 close together. However this was not always the case. Thinking has to develop through stages throughout childhood to get to where we are today & there are some common errors in logic that children often make in the process, We are all still learning though & it is essential- especially in education- that we understand the theories of we learn in order to maximise our learning potentials.

Memory

Memory is a fundamental human ability. It underpins our ability to perform any task and therefore it is hugely important to understand how it works. Understanding how to maximise memory is essential when revising for exams, but is also essential to your quality of life as you age. It is, however, scary how easily our memories can be manipulated and how unreliable they can be. False memories can have serious implication for eye witness testimonies, so we need to study memory to ensure justice in the legal system.

Brain and Neuropsychology

Brain abnormalities, chemical imbalances, the nervous system and genetics. All of these biological constructs hugely influence our behaviour and are often key to treating abnormal behaviours. Unique case studies, such as that of a patient who can only say the word ‘Tan’ tells us loads about how the brain works and the possible effects of damage to this most important organ.

Language, thought and communication ????

We all know what this facial expression means. We most commonly think of communication as the words we say, however there is so much more to it than that. Non- verbal communication can help us communicate when we do not share a language and has helped ensure the survival of the human race, therefore understanding this topic gives is the power to understand the world.

Year 11 (2024-45)

Due to a curriculum restructure, the current year 11 are studying some topics that will, in future, be taught in year 10 so there is some repetition of units listed here.

Perception

What we see isn’t always the same as what we perceive. Visual illusions trick us into perceiving information incorrectly- for example thinking a shape is there when it actually isn’t. Understanding how we can create these illusions has lots of application to other subjects too, such as art. This knowledge can be used to create depth in a 2D image for example. Understanding factors which affect our perception can help us understand how people can see the world differently, for example, if you’re hungry you perceive food as brighter..!

The decisions that the government makes have a huge influence on businesses; they have to change and adapt in order to run effectively. Exchange rates, interest rates, inflation. Businesses need to respond to these quickly in order to remain successful.

Making human resource decisions

How do I secure a job– what is the process? Do you understand the tasks involved in applying for jobs?  What do good / effective applications & interviews look like and how can you highlight your skills? We also look at this from the employer’s perspective to consider how businesses select suitable talent to drive their business forward and how they design a fair but rigorous process.
